Bio
Jared Southgate takes the new ball for his side in Cape Town, Western Province CC, in the Western Province Cricket Association Premier Division, certainly one of the stronger competitions throughout the whole of South Africa. Jared’s aggressive brand of left-arm pace has become a potent weapon since debuting in the first team of his former club, Strandfontein CC, at the age of 17.
His potency was demonstrated in the 2022/23 season with Strandfontein CC in the WPCA Div 1A when he took 27 wickets at a meagre average of 16.6, any bowler that took more wickets in that season had played more matches than Jared.
Jared opted to change clubs ahead of the 2023/24 season and join Western Province CC in the WPCA Premier Division where he regularly comes up against current and former first- class cricketers and he certainly didn’t look out of his depth, he took eight wickets at 29.3 which will surely lead to more opportunities in 24/25. He is a part of a very strong WPCC bowling attack and it was no surprise they had a strong third place finish last season.
His action is full of intent, maximum effort going into each delivery with a Neil Wagner-type follow through. He has a great attitude, unfazed by slow flat pitches, Jared gives maximum effort to extract whatever he possibly can out of the pitch. A man for tough situations.
He has progressed through the ranks from junior age group cricket with Western Province to a fine standard of school cricket with Wynberg Boys’ High School while holding leadership roles within many of those sides.
Jared was also selected for the District Sixers U19’s in December 2021 in the CPL Tournament (T20) and played for the full side in 2022 picking up 16 wickets in the 7 matches he played.
Initial success in cricket for Jared came with the bat before his skills with the ball started grabbing the headlines and he became a frontline pace bowler in 2017. However, in recent times his batting has once again started to pick up and that has come with being given more responsibility up the order.
He has UK experience too, in 2023 Jared signed for Easton CC in the Two Counties Cricket Championship, his 34 league wickets came at 18.91 and he made some very useful contributions in the mid-lower order scoring 257 runs at 21.42. He was a major hit with the junior sections at the club, his way with the kids and coaching knowledge was a very welcome bonus for the club.
In 2024 he returned this time to play at Sandwich Town CC to be in close proximity of his girlfriend but as they had already signed an overseas player for the first team was restricted to play second team cricket (Kent Cricket League Div 4) and an ideal opportunity to work on his batting. He made a very effective top order bat with 585 league runs at 45.00. His 30 wickets came at 19.
It is of course his bowling that sets him apart from most, the left-arm angle and an ability to hit the pitch hard ensures the batsmen have a far from comfortable time against Jared Southgate. A confident young man that is hoping to continue his development, on and off the pitch, in the UK in 2025. He’ll bring a wholehearted attitude and experience of coaching young cricketers as he has done with U10, U11, U15 and U19 teams back in South Africa (although no formal coaching qualification) alongside his obvious qualities with the ball and bat.
