Big quick West Indian pace bowlers are nothing new to club cricket in the UK historically, however, in recent times they are not being picked up by clubs here anywhere near as often as they used to be. There may not be the number of options there once was, but there is plenty of fantastic talent in the Caribbean, in particular in Barbados.

Demario Slocombe is one of those talents. A big, strong bowler that stays tall at the crease, gets his wrist behind the ball and hits the pitch hard. His strongest asset, along with his ability to deliver a very heavy ball, is bringing the ball into the right hander either through the air, off the pitch or with a natural angle back in. He has that in-built stamina that allows him to bowl lengthy spells at good pace and can execute game plans accurately.

At Spartans CC (Fusionz Boutique Spartan to give them their full name) Demario has deservedly received call-ups into the first team which plays in the Elite Division, the highest level of club cricket in Barbados, where first-class players regularly appear.

With the bat, he has undoubted ability and an impressive eye. During his early days he was certainly considered a genuine all-rounder but a lack of opportunities and the gradual improvement of his bowling saw a primary focus on wreaking havoc with the ball. He now likes to put bat to ball and in the mid-lower order has a licence to do so. Given the right opportunities and some responsibility there’s no reason he couldn’t have a more significant impact with the bat.

Demario was given a late opportunity to head to the UK in 2024, which he did with minimal notice and was straight into action. Martinstown CC were the team to sign him and he played 13 league games in the Dorset Cricket League Premier Two Division taking 24 league wickets at an eye-catching 13.33. His stand out figures were 9-4-8-5 when he ran through the Hamworthy Recreation CC batting unit.

The biggest surprise was that a club didn’t sign him earlier in the off-season. Very keen to return to the UK in 2025, Demario Slocombe is described as a ‘dynamic player with a big heart’, the type of attributes that make a huge difference to a club on and off the field in leading by example.
