Bio
David is a former first-class cricketer for Western Province and Cape Cobras whose hugely effective left-arm spin continues to take plenty of wickets in club cricket, while also chipping in with important runs in the very competitive Western Province Cricket Association league.
After producing consistently high level performances for Primrose CC in Cape Town, Western Province simply had to select him for first-class cricket in December 2019 against KwaZulu Natal Coastal. He carried with him a belief after years of mastering and understanding his craft and registered a very respectable start with match figures of 5-87 off 31 overs.
His first season with WP finished with him taking 11 wickets at 18.18 and it wasn’t long before Cape Cobras also called on his services where he was unsurprisingly tidily effective.
A first-class record of 15 wickets at 20.46 with an economy of 2.96 indicates he belonged at that level and maybe should have received an opportunity sooner.
So from 2021 it’s been back to club cricket yet his enthusiasm, desire and performance levels haven’t dropped, 13 wickets at 7.2 in 21/22, a remarkable 54 wickets at 9.7 (and 202 runs at 22.4) helped Primrose CC into the WPCA Premier League. Then another 23 wickets at 29.2 in a very tough Premier League along with 264 runs at 24 with the bat showed his all-round importance to the side.
For the 24/25 season Schierhout has opted for a fresh challenge, dropping down a couple of divisions for a project to propel Yorkshire CC up through the divisions quickly, something you wouldn’t bet against David inspiring.
He has also had three seasons in the UK, starting back in 2017 with Brooksbottom CC and moving to Heyside CC the following year, both clubs part of the Greater Manchester Cricket League. Across the two seasons he took 101 wickets at 15.84 and made 723 runs.
In 2023 he was back, this time down in the Home Counties Division Two league contributing heavily to Oxford Downs CC winning promotion to Division One. His 38 wickets at 12.61 and 173 runs at 17.30 certainly proved important.
His accurate left-arm spin has bamboozled batsmen across the globe for years and shows no signs of slowing up.
A qualified coach with a diploma in coaching science David would be an astute overseas signing for any club looking for an experienced high quality option.
