Bio
There can’t be many 25-year old’s with the amount of experience at high levels and in different conditions as Singapore-born opening batsman Amartya Kaul.
Currently plying his trade as a first-class cricketer in Sri Lanka, Amartya’s journey so far is indeed a fascinating one and you get the sense it has still only just begun. Spells playing cricket in Sri Lanka, England, Australia, India, Abu Dhabi, with the Singapore national side, are all developmental steps as he continues his cricketing education and his career into professional cricket.
Born in Singapore, he enjoyed many of his childhood years in India before his education began in Northamptonshire and soon after he started his first team club cricket career with Spencer CC of the Surrey Championship. He spent around five years in this league with playing time at Wimbledon CC too.
Amartya moved to Brondesbury CC in the Middlesex Premier League in 2021, but it was the following year when things really started to take off overseas for Kaul.
He got a chance with Kalatara Town Club under-23’s in Sri Lanka at the start of the year and after impressing at the top of the order he made his professional debut in T20 cricket and then List A the following month. His form in the shortest format with sparkling back-to-back 40’s gave Sri Lanka an idea of what he’s capable of.
His first-class introduction came with Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club in August 2022 and then later the same year Amartya Kaul announced himself on the international scene with 56 on debut for Singapore in a T20 fixture.
In 2023 the talented all-rounder was signed up by Bangla Tigers for the Abu Dhabi T10 in the emerging category with a host of illustrious names for Amartya to pick the brains of and train alongside – Chris Lynn, David Miller, Tom Abell, Carlos Brathwaite, one of England’s latest recruits Jordan Cox, to name but a few.
While Amartya has caught the eye mostly for his short-format cricket he certainly has the game for red ball cricket and has been working meticulously on improvement in all areas.
While playing his club cricket with Brondesbury CC in 2024 he also gained selection for the prestigious SACA (South Asian Cricket Academy) and played in three matches against second teams from Warwickshire, Essex and Sussex and despite getting a start in each of those games couldn’t go on and make a real defining score.
Amartya is currently back in Sri Lanka working hard for the start of the season that gets underway at the end of December where he’s hoping to be part of the most successful team in Sri Lankan domestic cricket, the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Amartya’s game has continually been developing as he seeks to succeed in so many different conditions. His ability to play high quality spin has improved immeasurably as its an essential skill required to form a career on Sri Lankan pitches.
Constantly fluctuating between formats has been another challenge for Amartya to overcome and he has worked hard, not just on the technical aspects of his game, but also the mental side which he places huge importance on. The strides he’s made in this area are evident with his confidence at the crease and a real belief in his decision making out in the middle.
Amartya is very keen to continue playing his cricket in the UK in 2025 and the benefit of having a UK passport helps make this possible. Inclusion in the SACA team once again is a distinct possibility as is playing some county 2’s cricket meaning Amartya will be hoping to play a lot of cricket next summer. He is aware of his growing responsibility in club cricket here as a top order batsman and is keen to get involved with the right UK club.
He isn’t just a talented top order batsman, he has returned to his medium pace bowling following some relative inactivity in this discipline due to back issues a few years back that have now been resolved and his seam up will be very handy in English conditions.
